The American metrics system classifies paper by pounds per ream ( 1 ream = 500 sheets), using a basis sheet size of 25” x 38” for Book / Text stocks, 20” x 26” for Cover stocks, 17” x 22” for Bond, 25.5" x 30.5" for Index, and 24” x36” for Tag.

Instead of classifying paper by its weight per ream (500 sheets), the International weight system classifies paper thickness by grams per one square meter of a single sheet (g/m2 or gsm).
